PowerPoint Presentation Training Programme

Day One - Basic Principles

Defining Death by PowerPoint

We'll look at the sorts of experiences participants have had as members of the audience or as 'inflictors'. This will be an opportunity to make explicit what makes for the best and worst PowerPoint Presentations.

Hands Up!

Here we will ask delegates to put their hands up to those traps they fall into.

How do they feel about presenting with PowerPoint?
How much is expected of them?
What do they want from the day?

PowerPoint as a Communication Tool

Here we unpick what we already know about how communication works and how that applies specifically to PowerPoint communications.

Impact

Why do they want it?
What does it really mean?
We'll look at how the IMPACT mnemonic relates to PowerPoint presentations.

INDIVIDUAL: PowerPoint Presentations

Each participant will present their strengths to the group, without using a PowerPoint. Everyone will hear feedback on what we perceive already works about them.

Now we will look at the strengths of the medium itself.

Message: In One Minute

One of our best exercises which helps to focus our thoughts. We are looking here to ensure that our audience leaves us with exactly the message we intended.

Preparation: Starting from Scratch

A look at everything that's involved - including a great way to get started. We want to look at do-able ways to get our ideas kick-started into accessible and clear structures.

Audience: Considering their Terms of Reference

Crucial to effective PowerPoint Presentation is looking at our content from our audience’s point of view. Pre-empting their concerns, taking care of tricky issues and potential sticking points are as vital as knowing where to find our WOW factors. What will keep our audience engaged with our message?

PowerPoint Content

We look here at how to achieve clarity, as well as examine ways to move beyond bullet points to achieve convincing PowerPoint Presentations.

Visuals - Using Storyboards

Here we are looking at how to achieve optimum PowerPoint Presentations that build on the strengths of the medium.

Supporting your PowerPoint

There are so many ways we can support our message beyond the technical support of PowerPoint we'll consider all our options and what works best for everyone.

Conviction

Without it even the most polished PowerPoint Presentations can sink without trace! Where can participants find passion and emotion in their presentation? Where are the moments of excitement, tension and humour that they can exploit?

We play with ways to capture energy and passion that translates to our audience and underlines our message.

Technical

How can we best support the visual medium of PowerPoint? We'll consider the role of PowerPoint Presentations within the continuum of communication available to most presenters

Homework - Redrafting, Refreshing and Polishing

It is expected that all our participants will find time to try to apply their learning from Day One to their presentations so that they can get maximum benefit from the course.

Day Two PowerPoint Presentation Training Programme

Day Two is scheduled one week after day one, which will offer a real chance to practice tweaking and delivering their presentations, followed by the constructive feedback of their peers.

Having a Go

All participants will present their polished PowerPoint Presentations to the group. There will be an opportunity for intensive and personalised feedback for each delegate. Constructive and supportive, it will naturally refer to the successful application of the content of Day One.

Everyone will receive written feedback on their strengths and what further options they may use to shiny polish their revamped presentations.

Self-Editing and Self-Preservation Techniques

We may revise some simple and easy ways to bolster future writing effectiveness and presentation confidence.

Sod's Law

There's usually one! We will look at ways to handle difficult or resistant audiences and consider ways to handle the sod's law of presentation scenarios.

Troubleshooting

According to their needs, we may also spend time looking at dynamic presentation openings and effective endings, as well as ways to deal with more complex material.

As we work with maximum group sizes of 6 participants, each presenter will enjoy the focused attention of a trainer and a maximum of 3 of their peers.

The Future

Participants will identify what specific strategies they will use in the future and how they might further develop their unique PowerPoint Presentation style.

What further support might they need or want? Any further insights will be useful for their development after the PowerPoint Presentation Course, whether to inform follow-up workshops or in-house mentoring needs.

Our participants will be given a variety of useful handouts as reminders of our top tips.

It is a strong recommendation that delegates create and deliver a presentation at any level within at least a week of doing this course.
