Wild about Bury
Last week Kim Wilde joined the In Bloom team and local townspeople to launch this year's bid to become the 'best in Britain'. Says Jo Ellen, "This year, Bury St Edmunds, a Gold Medal winner in Anglia in Bloom in 2005 and 2006, has been nominated for the national finals and we are pulling out all the stops to show we are the best large town, not just in East Anglia, but in all of Britain. Competition is fierce and we're working in partnership with a great number of community groups to get everyone involved in being a part of Bury in Bloom.
Britain in Bloom is managed by the Royal Horticultural Society and this year their theme is 'Bloomin' Wild' which is all about encouraging wildlife into gardens and urban spaces.
Inspired by the BBC's Make Space for Nature scheme a few years ago, Jo Ellen has added a Pledge Scheme to the Bury in Bloom campaign where people can pledge to do just about anything to make Bury a better place to be (get a water butt, plant a hanging basket, put up bird, bee or bat boxes, plant wildflowers or even just grow more nectar bearing plants, etc.).
Already there are projects with the Scouts who are building 100 bird and bat boxes and working on an allotment, schoolchildren have planted 2000 native bluebells which will be added to every year to create a bluebell walk in the town's historic Abbey Gardens, allotment holders are doing a wildlife survey, a community garden on a run down estate has been designed by a local lad and will be planted up soon.
Kim Wilde was perfect for our launch and praised our efforts and passion for being Wild About Bury. She said that "Making a pledge and then doing it is an easy way for everyone in the town to participate to help Bury become a winner."
Jo Ellen will keep us all posted on how the campaign progresses.
