Where to watch inspiring Presentations

As a trainer in Presentation and Communication Skills, I see hundreds of business presentations over a year, some good, some bad, but very few that are great, passionate, moving, funny, shocking, exhilarating or absorbing. Why is that?

We would all expect to experience many of these emotions if we were watching a good film, and yet it's a common business practice to accept and often expect the dull, boring and sometimes confusing.

Powerful presentations are much closer to movies than many of us think. Great presentations are like great films; they can transport you to another world, absorb you in their mysteries and fascinate you on their journey from beginning to end.

The best films and the best presentations have one key element that runs through them, and that's story. Stories have been engaging, teaching, uplifting and amusing us from our earliest development.

That's why I love watching TED talks at TED.com. I recommend anyone planning to perform any kind of presentation, to take time out and watch these great talks.

TED began life in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. TED's annual conferences in Long Beach and Oxford bring together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives in under 20 minutes.

The website launched in April 2007, and they believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world.

TED is the perfect place to watch some passionate presentations. I have watched hundreds and I'd like to share four of my personal favourites. They are all very different in style, but they all share the power of absorbing, funny and moving stories. Enjoy.

Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of Eat, Pray, Love, muses on the impossible things we expect from artists and geniuses, and shares the radical idea that, instead of the rare person "being" a genius, all of us "have" a genius.
