Sales Training and Personal Branding - What It Says On The Can

by Liz McKechnie

When I sold my last house it went pretty quickly. Actually it went within half an hour. Admittedly that was when property was shifting pretty darn quick and you had to make swift decisions.

I think it was because the buyer happened to catch me in so it was me who showed her round rather than the estate agent who only knew about measurements and prices. Now it is a nice but relatively ordinary house not really special in any way on the face of it... unless you know its secret value.

I was able to show this buyer the way we lived in it.

I showed her the secret passageway to the woods through the back gate and explained how the kids could go to school and to the shops through there without having to cross a road. I introduced her to the end of the potting shed that had become a converted flat for the rabbits and guinea pigs. Likewise I pointed out the rope ladder to the attic which doubled as an exciting den as well as a storeroom. I explained how the view from the bedroom window revealed a thousand firework displays every November 5th including the famous extravaganza at Ally Pally. I knew all its stories and all its added value as a great house for young kids. I knew its brand and the buyer was the perfect market - a young mother to be.

When it comes to selling yourself in an interview for a job, a pitch or a presentation, how well do you know your own brand? Anyone can find out what you have done by reading your cv but they won't know what is special about you unless you tell them. What you do is one thing. How you do it is the interesting bit.

What is your unique selling point? What are your stories and secret areas of added value? What really floats your boat? What are your passions, values, and beliefs? How are you brilliant? If you were a product what would your commercial be like?

It's worth thinking about what is written on the side of your can. After all, it's you they buy...
