GLA - Death By Meeting
Death By MeetingLike any other large organisation the GLA suffers from a bit of a meetings culture.
These are all meetings that are vital to the proper functioning of a great international city, however they can sometimes put a brake on the dynamism of our capital.
The focus of the work looked firstly at how groups work, because everyone is part of a whole but is a whole person in their own right. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts (people), but it cannot function well if all its parts aren't in some form of accord. They don't have to agree on everything, but groups work best when their purpose is clear and there are agreed working practises.
People come together in groups for all sorts of reasons and so there is no right way to be part of a group, and every single group, no matter what its purpose, will have a personality all of its own.
Everyone was asked to bring along his or her more difficult meetings experiences to play about with.
We had a whale of a time.
We met some fascinating characters, many of whom seemed hell bent on bringing any form of progress to a complete halt.
Whilst working to the strengths of the delegates we dealt with blame and conflict, over-emotional people, obstructive and manipulative people, not to mention a few jokers and time wasters.
The day built the self-confidence of all the delegates, giving them new techniques for facilitating meetings more effectively and to maintain status under pressure.
We also dealt with bullying in the meeting room and identified games people play and strategies to stop them.
All in all a very productive meeting was had. If you would like to talk to us about work in Meetings Skills, please call us on
