Executive Presentation Coaching

My scariest experience of giving a presentation was standing up in front of a thousand people at a conference, looking out at the sea of faces and realising that every word I'd prepared had gone out of my head. My palms got damp and my mouth went dry, my knees trembled and my heart pounded!

If that sounds familiar then that's probably because for many people presenting is really scary. All those symptoms come from a gargantuan shot of adrenalin hitting the system when we realise that we are lunch. OK so we're not actually lunch, but, when the eyes of a big bunch of people fix on us, it can feel that way.

I've given many presentations since, to all kinds of groups – big and small, formal and informal, technical and non-technical – and I've learnt that rarely, if ever, is it as bad as I feared. The words come back, the heart calms down and the audience is fine.

There are some things we can do to help that along and to get into the swing of a really captivating presentation. I like to think of presentations as interesting conversations between me and the audience. It's two way and it's of interest to both parties.

There is nothing more satisfying than feeling you have an audience in the palm of your hand and can take them on a journey with you.

So when I'm coaching Presentation Skills I look for the human being behind the presentation. Who are they? How do they connect with their audience? What can they do more of to hook their audience in and get the message across in a truly memorable way?

In short, how can I help them to move from feeling like they're lunch to presenting a veritable feast of delights that nourishes and satiates their audience.
